American West Metals webinar review: Storm Copper and West Desert

American West Metals (ASX: AW1) featured in a webinar presentation with Managing Director Dave O’Neill. The discussion centred on the company’s two flagship assets: the Storm Copper Project in Nunavut, Canada, and the West Desert project in Utah, United States.

The presentation focused on the company’s development pathway, resource base, processing approach and logistics considerations. The comments below are based on the transcript provided and are limited to information stated during the webinar.

Storm Copper Project

Dave O’Neill said Storm has over 300,000 tonnes of copper in resource, with most of that in the indicated category. He also said work on a maiden reserve was underway and that a release was expected shortly.

Storm was described in the presentation as a proposed near-term open pit producer. O’Neill said the project sits within a large landholding in a sediment-hosted copper belt and that the company believes it has a low-cost and low-footprint development pathway.

The webinar also discussed the project’s processing strategy. O’Neill said the company is using ore sorting and beneficiation, and that a fine circuit is being added to improve recoveries. He said the company expects this to improve the economics of the project.

Location and logistics

O’Neill highlighted Storm’s location in Nunavut and said the project has access to shipping routes. He compared this with inland projects and said logistics are an important factor when moving large tonnes of material.

West Desert project

The webinar also covered West Desert in Utah. O’Neill described it as a base metal project with exposure to critical metals including indium, silver, gold and gallium.

He said the project is being drilled and that the company expects regular news in the near term. O’Neill also referred to the project in the context of US critical minerals supply and mentioned the importance of domestic sourcing for certain defence-related demand.

Funding and project timing

In the presentation, O’Neill said the company had $40 million already guaranteed against an initial capital estimate of $50 million, and that offtake had been sold to Ocean Partners. He said this reduced execution risk for the project.

He also said the company expects Storm to be a couple of years away from production and referenced a 2028/29 timeframe during the webinar.

Resource and valuation comments

O’Neill said Storm currently has over 275,000 tonnes of copper and 3 million ounces of silver. He also compared the project with other transactions in the market and discussed the potential value uplift from converting resources into reserves.

He said the company believes the mine could generate cash flow to fund further exploration and district consolidation.
