Vitrafy Life Sciences (ASX: VFY) has entered a partnership with US blood network Vitalant Innovation Centre focused on configuring its next-generation cryopreservation ecosystem to solve the looming crisis for red blood cell preservation.
The new partnership aims to address an urgent market need created by the impending discontinuation of legacy technologies used to cryopreserve red blood cells, along with the lack of suitable replacements.
Glycerol-based freezing technologies are expected to reach end-of-life in 2027, threatening the industry’s ability to keep red blood cells in cryopreserved, long-term stockpiles.
Without successor technology, the US blood network risks losing the stockpiling and preservation capabilities relied upon by emergency response units, particularly for rare blood types and in the case of mass-casualty events.
Market-Wide Solution
Under the new partnership, Vitrafy and Vitalant hope to deliver a market-wide solution to the emerging threat to the US blood network’s operating workflows and stockpiles relating to cryopreserved red blood cells.
Vitalant is one of the largest non-profit blood and biotherapies healthcare organisations in the US, providing hospitals and patients with continuous and safe blood supply.
The company has a nationwide network of around 125 donation centres and hosts approximately 60,000 blood drives per year.
Vitalant provides blood and special services to patients at around 900 hospitals and collects approximately 10% of the US market’s blood supply annually, with millions of patients depending on blood donations from its network.
Next-Generation Successor
Vitrafy managing director Brent Owens expected the Vitrafy ecosystem would become the successor to existing end-of-life legacy technologies across the US blood network.
"We are really excited to actively address an issue of national significance with one of the leading blood market participants in the US,” he said.
“The recognition of our cryopreservation ecosystem as the next-generation solution to this crisis reinforces our belief that we are securing meaningful market traction and creating a pathway to significant commercial scale.”
Vitrafy will initially deploy two cryopreservation freezing units to Vitalant’s premises in Colorado and, while the placement will not generate revenue, the company expects the move to support broader market and government engagement toward a unified response.
“We see this partnership as the first of several potential civilian blood opportunities that have stemmed from the successful results in the US Army platelets study,” Mr Owens added.
