H3 Energy (ASX: H3E) has identified multiple deeper gas leads beneath its Warro Gas Field in Western Australia after reprocessing 3D seismic data, raising the possibility of testing a new conventional gas play using existing wells.

The early interpretation points to prospective zones within the Cadda and Cattamarra Coal Measures, directly below the previously discovered Yarragadee gas reservoirs.

The Cattamarra Coal Measures have supported gas flows in nearby fields, including up to 13.5 million standard cubic feet per day at Walyering 1 and 12.1 million cubic feet per day at Red Gully 1, alongside condensate production.

Several low acoustic impedance anomalies appear to lie about 300 to 500 metres from existing wellbores, potentially offering a cheaper appraisal route than drilling entirely new exploration wells.

However, the seismic anomalies remain uncalibrated and further technical work is needed to determine whether they indicate suitable reservoir rock or gas-bearing formations.

Second Reservoir Opportunity

Warro has historically been assessed primarily through its tight Yarragadee reservoirs, which have required stimulation to produce gas.

By contrast, H3 is examining whether the deeper formations could contain conventional reservoirs capable of flowing naturally, although that possibility has yet to be established at Warro.

"Warro has always been viewed as a Yarragadee story,” chief executive officer Nik Sykiotis said.

“This reprocessing suggests there may be a second, potentially conventional play sitting directly underneath it, and some of it may be within reach of wells we have already drilled.”

“That changes the economics of appraisal, and we believe Warro is a significantly more attractive asset than we previously understood.”

Potential Cost Reduction

Initial mapping suggests some deeper prospects may be accessible by sidetracking or deepening existing wells, rather than committing immediately to new exploration drilling.

H3 is assessing whether additional seismic inversion work would justify its cost by calibrating acoustic impedance readings against sonic and density measurements from existing Warro wells.

That analysis could help distinguish potentially favourable reservoir characteristics from seismic responses that do not necessarily indicate recoverable hydrocarbons.

Drilling, completion, and reservoir engineering studies are also under way to determine how best to assess the deeper prospects alongside the commercial potential of the Yarragadee reservoir.

The company intends to complete interpretation, estimate the size of the identified leads and select a preferred appraisal concept before finalising its drilling plan.

R7 Lease Decision Key

The technical reassessment has received support through a $50,000 Exploration Incentive Scheme grant awarded in April 2026.

An important outstanding step is renewal of Warro’s R7 retention lease, which is currently due to expire on 4 December 2026.

H3 submitted its renewal application on 28 May together with a request to suspend and extend the fifth-year work commitments, and discussions with the Western Australian regulator remain ongoing.

The timing and scope of any future appraisal program will therefore depend on both the continuing technical evaluation and the outstanding regulatory decisions.

While the deeper leads introduce an additional exploration possibility at Warro, their commercial viability will remain uncertain until further evaluation and appropriate drilling and testing are completed.
