Intelligent microbiology developer Clever Culture Systems (ASX: CC5) has experienced continued commercial momentum for its flagship product APAS (automated plate assessment system) Independence, including customer evaluations and an advancing sales pipeline led by global pharmaceutical companies.

The company recently completed three APAS sales transactions with existing customers Novo Nordisk and AstraZeneca Australia, and a new Top 20 pharmaceutical supplier is expected to commence a paid evaluation.

This broadens the base of large pharmaceutical customers to nine, establishing a foundation for potential multi-site deployments.

Evaluations assess the analytical performance of APAS Independence and suitability for potential expansion across a customer’s drug manufacturing network, consistent with Clever Culture’s ‘land and expand’ sales strategy.

A sales agent partnership with PSC Biotech secured earlier this month for the US, Canada, and Singapore adds an additional commercial sales channel that includes a commitment to purchase an instrument, extending Clever Culture’s market reach into regional and single-site manufacturers.

New Sales Opportunities

Clever Culture is in final procurement discussions with two existing global pharmaceutical customers as they complete evaluations of APAS Independence, with purchase orders expected later this year.

The company is also finalising a purchase commitment from a new single-site pharmaceutical manufacturer, with installation and qualification being planned before year end.

The sales opportunity originated at the APAS discovery day, held at AstraZeneca’s Macquarie Park premises in June, and highlights the value of customer-led demonstrations in advancing commercial opportunities.

Clever Culture managing director Brent Barnes said the focus remained on converting evaluations into purchases and supporting broader deployment across customer manufacturing networks.

“This is how we are building a scalable business—growing our global installed base and expanding high-margin recurring software revenue,” he said.

Automated Process

APAS Independence is a standalone instrument that automates the imaging, interpretation, and reporting of microbial growth on culture plate media for pharmaceutical manufacturing and clinical applications.

The product is driven by AI-enabled software that delivers the intelligent image analysis needed for efficient and accurate microbiology automation.

Up to 240 culture plates can be bulk-loaded into the APAS unit for the system to autonomously read, interpret and validate results before sorting the plates into neat stacks for further processing.

Research shows APAS Independence can automatically process 200 culture plates per hour — or three times the speed of manual handling.

These commercial developments reflect continued progress towards establishing APAS Independence as the ‘gold standard’ for leading global pharmaceutical manufacturers.
