Carnegie Clean Energy (ASX: CCE) has completed the fabrication of a CETO buoyant actuator (BA) to be deployed at the state-of-the-art Biscay marine energy platform (BiMEP) off the Spanish coast next month.
Built locally in the Basque Country, the fully submerged and tethered buoy is a key part of the company’s CETO wave energy converter and uses a three-part modular design offering significant benefits for installation, operation, and maintenance activities as modules can be lifted out individually for work to be completed onshore.
The design also allows any module to be swapped out with a spare, enabling a quick turnaround during maintenance periods and reducing downtime of the CETO system.
The CETO BA will be transported by road to the port of Bilbao for quayside assembly and then lifted into the water portside and towed to Carnegie’s berth at the BiMEP for the first stage of deployment.
Achieve Wave Energy Program
Developed under the Achieve Program—a European wave energy project delivered by Carnegie subsidiary CETO Wave Energy Ireland—Carnegie’s CETO technology represents the culmination of extensive engineering, manufacturing, testing, and integration by the company and its project partners.
Carnegie confirmed that additional time had been invested in engineering validation, operational readiness, installation planning, and integration activities to support safe deployment and maximise the opportunity to obtain meaningful performance data during the demonstration phase.
Additionally, it said its team had dealt with unforeseen challenges such as first-in-kind manufacturing issues and supply chain delays which have impacted the schedule.
Power take-off (PTO) module assembly including mechanical and electrical components has been progressing onsite at Swedish global engineering and manufacturing company SKF.
It will be followed by onshore testing to validate operation of the PTO architecture, along with the electrical and control systems, in a controlled environment.
CETO Commercialisation
Carnegie’s Achieve activities have been designed to assess a range of technical and commercialisation objectives established under the $35.5 million EuropeWave Pre-Commercial Procurement Program framework designed to advance wave energy converter systems toward commercial viability.
The CETO BA deployment is intended to generate operational and performance data which will be used for future assessments of energy production, reliability, survivability, and maintainability.
Successful demonstration is expected to support CETO’s long-term commercialisation pathway by reducing costs and improving the performance of future ocean-based CETO arrays.
PTO modules are scheduled for delivery to Bilbao in late-2027 for integration into the BA and the start of second stage deployment, enabling initial grid connection to occur during more favourable weather.
